What Is An Intumescent Coating?

Intumescent paint is ingeniously designed with fire resistance in mind.

When exposed to high temperatures, in the event of a fire, a chemical reaction causes the coating to expand in a controlled manner up to fifty times its original thickness. Generally, it grows by 50mm for each 1mm of paint applied.

As it burns, the paint forms a layer of carbon known as a soft char or hard char, depending on the paint involved and the type of surface.

The charring forms an insulating layer as it's a poor heat conductor. This slows the fire's progress, potentially allowing all personnel to escape safely and reducing the risk of severe damage.

There are two main types of intumescent paint:

Thin-Film Intumescent Coatings

These can be solvent-based or water-based and are generally used in commercial and industrial settings. They remain inert unless exposed to temperatures between 200-250° when the chemical reaction occurs.

Thick-Film intumescent Coatings

This is a more heavy-duty material, suitable for high-risk industries where fire protection is a prerequisite, such as those related to oil and gas production.

The Benefits Of Intumescent Paint

It's no exaggeration to say that intumescent paint spraying has the potential to save lives, and it certainly has done so in the past.

Even so, this innovative material has other benefits:

Aesthetically Pleasing

Intumescent paints aren't just practical in offering fire protection; they provide an excellent finish too! A wide variety of pigments can be added that enhance the look of exposed structural steel. You don't need to compromise on aesthetics for the sake of safety.

At Revamp Spray, we only use intumescent paint of the highest quality. This isn't only about improving the look of your property, it's also about safety and protection, and that is an area where we will never compromise.

We can apply paint in almost any colour you wish. Our specialist will work with you to find the best match for your building, whether inside or out. We can help you strengthen your corporate image and increase your fire protection at the same time.

Fire Protection For Structural Steel in Huddersfield

Steel acts strangely at high temperatures. When it reaches 550°, structural elements made from steel begin to lose their load-bearing capacity, which can be disastrous.

A coating of intumescent paint will protect load-bearing elements for up to two hours in the event of a fire. By this time, it is likely that the fire will be extinguished, or at least under control.

Intumescent Paint Prevents Damage

An intumescent coating forces the fire to burn at a lower temperature, reducing the risk of heat damage to certain materials within the building, especially wood. It also lowers the possibility of smoke damage, which is one of the worst effects of a fire and is often overlooked.

Quick And Convenient Application

Revamp Spray specialist on-site* intumescent paint sprayers will have the job done in no time. That's not to say the process will be rushed! Our teams are consummate professionals dedicated to producing the very best results.

*Steel beams can be pre sprayed with a thin film before construction, although there is a chance that the paint will be damaged in transit or when bolts are affixed. This may affect the paint's fire protection quality, allowing heat to pass through into the structure.

We can arrange any work to take place outside of business hours to minimise any impact on your working day.

The Revamp Spray team will prepare all surfaces to be sprayed and mask and cover any surfaces or items that aren't to be sprayed with protective sheets as a precaution. Overspray is rare, but our staff will take no risks.

Using professional spray painting equipment, the team will apply intumescent paints appropriate to the building and materials in the colours scheme of your choice.

When the job is complete, they will inspect the finish to ensure that it is up to standard before tidying away tools and equipment. Your building will be transformed, and you'll have an effective method of passive fire protection,

In addition to all these points, intumescent paint doesn't alter the mechanical properties of the materials it's sprayed onto.

Where Can Intumescent Paints Be Applied?

Intumescent products have a wide range of applications these days, from fire doors to oil rigs. However, our specialists primarily deal with commercial and industrial spray painting of internal and external walls, roofs, ceilings, and structural steelwork.

Here are some examples of the surfaces that can be sprayed:

  • Steel beams
  • Softwood
  • Brick
  • Metal
  • Hardwood
  • Chipboard
  • MDF
  • Plasterboard
  • Concrete

Although they can be used on all these materials, intumescent coatings are probably used on structural steel more than the others.

This is usually made up of three main components which are ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol and melamine.

Can intumescent paint be applied on site?
